Parashurama Jayanti in 2023

In honour of the birth anniversary of Lord Vishnu's sixth incarnation, Parashurama Jayanti is observed. It occurs in Vaishakha during Shukla Paksha Tritiya. Since it is thought that Parashurama was born during Pradosh Kala, celebrations for Parashurama Jayanti are held on the day when Tritiya is in effect at that time. Lord Vishnu's sixth manifestation is intended to lighten Earth's load by eliminating the wicked, destructive, and irreligious kings who exploited the planet's resources and neglected their responsibilities as monarchs.

Contrary to all other avatars, according to Hinduism, Parashurama still resides on Earth. As a result, Parashurama is not revered like Rama and Krishna are. At the revered site of Pajaka, which is close to Udupi, in South India, there is a significant temple that honours Parashurama.

The western coast of India is home to a large number of temples honouring Lord Parashurama.

Shri Kalki, the 10th and last Avatar of Lord Vishnu, would have Parashurama as his martial arts instructor, according to the Kalki Purana. The sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu will encounter another avatar not for the first time. The seventh avatar of Lord Vishnu was there when Parashurama attended Sita and Lord Rama's wedding, according to the Ramayana.

When is Parashurama Jayanti?

On the Tritiya (third day) of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh, this regional Indian holiday is celebrated.

It commemorates the anniversary of Parashurama's birth, the sixth Hindu incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Traditions of Parashurama Jayanti

According to tradition, the demon king Kiratarjuna and his kingdom of the Kshatriyas ruled over Mahishmati Nagri, an area in central India.

Goddess Earth requested Lord Vishnu for assistance since she was so worried about the king's wicked conduct. According to Lord Vishnu, the empire would be destroyed when he was born as Renuka and Sage Jamadagni's son. By defeating the monarch and the Kshatriyas in his reincarnation as the legendary warrior Parshurama (literally, Rama with an axe), Vishnu restored peace on Earth.

For Hindus, this day has significant religious importance. On the night before Parshuram Jayanti, devotees observe a fast. They go to temples and worship Lord Vishnu there in order to obtain his blessings. On this day, giving food to Brahmans is seen to be particularly auspicious.

Akshaya Tritiya, another name for this day, is regarded as a lucky day to begin or carry out something auspicious.

In various Hindu literature, Parashurama may also go by the names Rama Jamadagnya, Rama Bhargava, and Veerarama. The Niyogi Bhumihar Brahmin, Chitpavan, Daivadnya, Mohyal, Tyagi, Anavil, and Nambudiri Brahmin communities all revere Parashurama as their mool purush, or creator.
